Scientists at the Institute of Biological Therapeutics (SAB) are researching and testing a set of antibodies known as “polyclonal” antibodies. These antibodies are made in the human body and can eliminate a specific invading organism or virus and prevent its spread.
Polyclonal antibodies have already been used to treat MERS and influenza. Currently, this institute wants to study the polyclonal antibodies in the blood of cows for the treatment of Covid-19. The cows whose blood plasma is used are not ordinary cows, because the genes that produce antibodies in the human body have been injected into these cows.
Injecting these genes into cows enables them to fight off what their bodies recognize as an infection or viral attack.
The chief executive officer of SAB, Eddie Sullivan, says: These cows can produce strong, specifically targeted neutralizing antibodies that can be used in human patients. Scientists believe that targeted neutralizing antibodies can be effective in preventing the spread of infection in people with Covid-19.
Scientists decided to use cows in this experiment because they can extract a large amount of plasma from cows at a time. Paddy Sullivan says: Between 30 and 45 liters of plasma are extracted from each animal every month.
According to the latest report from CNN, a human trial for the treatment of Covid-19 using cow plasma will begin next week at another company. The chief of the Regeneron pharmaceutical company, Dr. George Pankopoulos, says: We hope to be able to produce hundreds of thousands of doses of drugs for the treatment or prevention of the coronavirus before the end of the summer. This company has started testing the drug for the treatment of Covid-19, which it took from mice, to humans.
Tech Times has pointed out in its report that cows have many advantages over human plasma donors. Cows have a stronger immune system than humans, which makes them react more strongly to repeated injections of coronavirus.
